Nexium is used to treat acid reflux, heartburn, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It lowers stomach acid and also relieves symptoms of GERD. Nexium is an acid-relieving medicine. Nexium works by blocking the release of hormones that cause reflux and heartburn. It also works by reducing the severity of acid damage to the stomach.
Take 1 capsule with a glass of water (2 times daily) as needed before food or meals for at least 2 hours after each meal. Swallow the capsule whole, with or without food. Do not crush or chew the capsules. Take the medicine in the 3-6 hours before bedtime. Do not take more than 3 doses in a 24-hour period.

Tell your doctor if you also have a history of heart problems or have or have had a heart attack, heart surgery, including a recent one. Tell your doctor if you or anyone in your family has low blood pressure, diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma, or has had a stroke or heart attack while using this medicine. This medicine may cause a severe irregular heartbeat. Do not use for more than 2 days at a time if you have heart problems. - - - If you are trying to become pregnant, tell your doctor before using this medicine.
Keep all medicines out of reach of children. Treatment with Nexium should not be taken by people with kidney or liver problems. - - If you are pregnant, could be exposed to radiation or radiation therapy before the baby is born. - If you are having difficulty breathing or miscarry, call your doctor.
